Dinah PoKempner
I’ve been making ceramic art for more than four decades, yet it always feels as though I’ve just fallen in love with clay. My work reflects continual experimentation with new forms, materials and techniques, all connected by a belief that what we use every day should be soulful and lovely. The functional is the most intimate of artistic forms—I design not only to please the eye, but the hand, the fingers, the lips.
Functional pottery is one of the oldest means of artistic expression, and I’ve been fortunate in a life of wandering through Asia, Africa and Europe to have encountered many different ceramic traditions and extraordinary potters. My inspiration, though, is usually closer to home, in the fields, woods and rocky terrain of the South Mountain range. These days, when I am not teaching or learning from other terrific potters at the Center for Contemporary Art, I am in my New Jersey studio, experimenting and looking forward to sharing what I make with you.
